The Republic of
Montenegro (with an area of 13.812 km2 and
population of 648.000), is situated on the Balkans.
On the one hand, it is a part of the
Adriatic/Mediterranean region, and on the other,
through the Panonian plane, it is connected to
Central Europe, and further, with the world economy.
Montenegro is a small country, but one that is rich
with natural advantages, cultural and historical
landmarks, and is one of the most beautiful tourist
destinations. Accommodation capacity is 150 000
bed-places, 37 000 of which are in basic form
(hotels, motels, boarding houses and tourist
resorts). This prominent imbalance in the spatial
distribution of accommodation capacities creates a
great potential for foreign investment, as numerous
beautiful, ecologically intact locations have not
yet been used for tourism. The most developed forms
of tourism are summer and winter tourism.
The coastline of
Montenegro (293 km long) has numerous sand and
pebble beaches (117 of them, 73 km long). The length
of the sand beaches is 33 km. The capacity of the
beaches is 230 000 people. Air temperature is above
18 degrees Celcius during 6 months a year, and this,
coupled with a pleasant water temperature and a
great number of sunny days, makes the Montenegrin
coast one of the warmest, sunniest tourist regions
of Europe. Although Montenegro is considered to be a
Mediterranean country, it is a mountainous country
as 60.5% of its territory is located over 1000 m
above sea level. The Montenegrin mountain range
stretching from Maglic, Volujak and Bioc on the west
to Prokletije on the east, crisscrossed with the
magnificent canyons of the rivers Piva, Komarnica,
Susica, Tara and Moraca and over 35 picturesque
lakes, is one of the most beautiful and ecologically
intact mountainous regions of Yugoslavia and Europe.
The greatest
touristic potential of the mountains is their skiing
capacity. With a minimum of 60 m2 of path per skier,
the mountains can accommodate around 200 000 guests,
while currently there are only 2800 bed-places.
Montenegro is about
sea foam, as well as snow flakes. In November or
May, a tourist can swim in the clear blue sea, and
then, a mere two hour drive later, that same day,
ski on Durmitor or Bjelasica.
